Sons of Red Earth

Part science-fiction romance, part classical tragedy, Sons of Red Earth follows the internal narratives of Ira, a young diplomat of the alien Eruhan Empire, and Ilyas, his father and Emperor. Bound by love and loss, the two struggle for power in the final weeks of Ilyas's imperial reign. As Ira prepares for an uncertain future and Ilyas devotes himself to vengeance, their conflict dredges up years of unprocessed carnage. With the revelation of his father's terminal illness followed by a bitter homecoming, Ira finds the once-concrete past eroding the closer he draws to the throne, to his father, and to the truth of his family history. 

Inspired by a range of texts, from Marguerite Yourcenar's Memoirs of Hadrian to Tsutomu Nihei's Abara, Sons of Red Earth explores the interplay of physical and psychological violence; the mutability of memory; power and queer desire; and the erotic nature of grief.
